The case of the motor oil

I needed to top up my engine oil, so I bought some from Wilkinson. When I went to do it I coudnt get the top off, after a struggle i got it off, but underneath was a plastic film, which i coudnt get off without the scissors. Why a plastic film? Its not as if i have to cook it for 45 mins at gas mark 5? confused
